2-15-13 Shark Fishing in Islamorada

The spring time is almost here, and that means one thing. Sharks, BIG SHARKS, are on their way. Now is when you want to book your Islamorada Shark Trip. We went out to the Hump yesterday, which is a large underwater sea mountain that comes up from 500′ to 290′, spending a few hours there fishing. Now we didn’t catch any sharks there, but we did catch a couple amberjack, and they spawn here in the Spring Time, and the Humps is where sharks feast upon the amberjack in a feeding frenzy. We did catch a couple amberjack yesterday, including a fat 75 lber. After that we did some “deep dropping” , which is bottom fishing in 500′ of water, and caught the rare Cat Shark. This is the biggest one of these I have caught, probably 3 1/2 feet long. The Day before we stopped at the hump for a few minutes and sent down a bonito for shark bait, and had a couple bites, but they appeared to be small sharks because we couldn’t hook them and got most the bait back each time. In another couple weeks we should be battling the sharks over the amberjack as we catch them on the hump. And if Shark Fishing in Islamorada interests you, the Spring time is when you want to try to get those big tigers, bulls, and hammerheads. When you use a 40 lb amberjack for bait, you know it’s going to be a big creature that eats it.

January islamorada shark fishing

Had Frank and Mina, two regulars, out today in the backcountry fishing islamorada. We stuck in the channels back there as it was blowing hard 20mph out of the south.  There aren’t many options in these types of conditions, but one that is good is islamorada backcountry shark fishing.  We caught plenty of ladyfish, trout, jacks, and pompano – all fun rod benders and goot eating too if your into that.  We saved the ladies for bait, one of my favorites for big sharks, sawfish, tarpon, or goliath groupers.  We were able to stake up in an area where we kept having action on the light tackle while putting a cut ladyfish on the bottom for sharks, killing two birds with one stone.  We even chummed a little, cutting many of the ladyfish to get things going.  The sharks fishing in flamingo wasn’t too active as january is a tougher time to catch them in the backcountry, but with the warm south wind the water temps were not too bad.  We had a few small blacktips bite that weren’t able to find the hook, but we ended up catching this nice 90 lb bull shark.  We headed in after that as we only had a half day, but goes to show you there are always some fun options even when the wind is howling when you go florida keys shark fishing in january.

Great Islamorada Shark Fishing Bait!

A lot of people come fishing for sharks in Islamorada. Now you can definitely catch sharks on a lot of different types of bait, but there’s a couple that we use a lot of on our Moster Shark Fishing Charters. One of the best shark baits around is a fresh barracuda. They smell terrible and sharks can’t resist them. We can’t always catch a fresh barracuda for every trip, but a lot of times we catch them on other trips and stick them in the freezer. It’s always nice to leave the dock on an Islamorada shark fishing trip with bait in the boat!

1-15-13 Shark Fishing in Islamorada in January

Had our good customer Jeff out today with Dave for some Shark Fishing in Islamorada in January. They fished the shallow waters on the Atlantic Side with live shrimp for bait. The tackle consisted of 15 lb braided line with 30 lb monofilament leader. They caught and released two bonnethead sharks, about 3′ in length in an hour and a half of fishing. Sharks can be caught all year long here on Florida Keys Shark Fishing Charters.

1/13/2013 Islamorada Shark Fishing in January

Winds were howling today 15-20mph out of the east, a common occurrence in the spring time but not so much this time of year.  Luckily in our more comfortable 20′ seacraft it was not an issue.  We went shark fishing in islamorada on the edge of the gulf of mexico.  These are known as the ‘spanish mackerel grounds’ and in the winter time the action is hot and heavy.  It is also a great place to catch big blacktip a.k.a spinner sharks.  These brutes are pound for pound some of the toughest sharks there are to battle, they also jump and spin like a torpedo adding some excitement to the encounter.  Blacktip shark fishing is usually best on the falling tide out here, and as today when they are biting it usually doesn’t take very long to hook into one.  What we usually do is fish for the spanish macks which are one of the best shark baits there is.  We then just cut them in half and put them out on heavy wire with a big hook and heavier spin or conventional tackle.  January shark fishing Islamorada is going to be most productive in this area if your looking to go in the backcountry, these sharks also don’t mind the cooler water temps quite as much as the lemons, bulls, and others in the ‘glades.  The black tips can get up to 80 or so lbs, and often you must chase them down as they can nearly spool you if your note careful and anchored up!  We ended up catching two today, one of 55 lbs and this one which was likely close to 70.  We also broke a couple others off and caught two big nurse sharks.  Good action for this islamorada shark fishing report.
